What happens in a typical class?
Elementary, Middle, and High school classes begin with focused warm up activities and exercises. Depending on the class, students then engage in the exploration of improvisation, musical theatre or scene study activities. Core theatre skills such as projection, diction, blocking, stage directions and objectives are taught throughout the semester. The students then spend the remainder of class rehearsing their final showcase. On the final class day, parents and friends are invited into the theatre for a performance demonstrating some of the work done throughout the semester or camp. Costumes are theatre company t-shirts and dark pants or shorts. Costume pieces will be added as needed. If you are late or need help finding the class location, please call or text the VCT Academy Attendance and Emergency Line: 540-266-3443

WHO WILL BE TEACHING? HOW CAN WE BE PART OF THE EXPERIENCE?

Can parents stay with their student during class?
We ask that parents please wait in the lobby so that our teaching artists can provide the most efficient and productive educational experience.
What are the qualifications of VCT Artistic Instructor?
Staff members at the Virginia Children’s Theatre are accomplished, talented theatre educators with a passion for working with young people. All our Teaching Artists have been trained in theatre education and many have advanced degrees in theatre, education or both. Our artistic instructor bios are available here so you can learn more about your student’s instructor.
What is the VCT Theatre Academy Showcase?
All VCT class sessions conclude with a special Showcase, when students present work and demonstrate skills learned throughout the session to an “audience” of their parents, family, and friends through a casual, fun, and interactive presentation in the theatre. During the school year our emphasis is on process not product. Using classroom time to teach technique and skills is the best way for us to build up your student’s natural talent. The Showcase is a chance for parents to see what a typical class session is like as well as chance for students to present their work.
